So, as some of you know, I was laid off from my job at the well-known, NY- based 3D printer manufacturing company where I worked for about 2 years; I’ll have been out of work for a month on Thursday. While this month has been nice in some ways (can take time to figure things out), it’s also been really rough. Not having everything that comes with having a job has been tough (social aspect, actual work, importance, somewhere to go), so I’ve been spending most of my days in Madison Square Park, applying to jobs and such. I’ve finally got a nice update to share:

I’ve been looking for work, within NYC, tech industry, smaller company-type positions and I have a (BIG) interview with a company, for a position that’s almost exactly what I was doing previously. I’d love to get this job. It would be a big move for my career as well. One day, three hours, six people. It’s super close to my apartment, and it’s a great place to work. I’m really. REALLY. excited. Yes, I’m nervous too. The position calls for a bit more time experience than I have, but I’m more than willing to put the time in and learn as much as I can to be the best that I can. I hope they can see this. The recruiter I spoke with thought extremely highly of me, and even called me this morning to help prep me for tomorrow.

On the note of careers however, I’ve been thinking about doing a coding bootcamp, as it’s something I’m interested in but don’t have the conviction to teach myself. Since I’m in my mid-20s, with zero debt, I can afford to do a full time, 3 month course and then get a really great job out of it. My absolutely amazing girlfriend supports me doing this, and is the one who suggested it, so that’s a great thing. Does anyone have experience with this? What’s your experience been like?

If I do get this job though, I’ve decided that I’ll do part time classes as a developer. Paying money for something helps me justify it, and helps me to make sure I still with it.

On another note, I’m taking a nice long road trip with my girlfriend down to Florida in a few weeks. It’s a vacation I’ve had planned for a while. Flying back though. Since moving to Manhattan, I’ve driven about.... 3 times in the last 5 or 6 months, so I’m looking forward to getting in a car again, even if it’s a cheap, automatic rental (Focus-esuqe).

Would love to hear your feedback and opinions, well on... everything. It’s tough not to get bored during the day, and that’s why I try and get out of the house ASAP. I’ve been following a normal routine to keep myself psyched (gym in the AM with the girlfriend), but some days it’s really hard.

Are you at Shapeways? Coding camp: do it! We have Flatiron and GA grads in our shop. Excellent stuff. I was actually thinking about teaching at GA myself.

I’m not actually, but I’m looking into Shapeways! I interviewed there for a position that ended up getting cancelled a few months back, but there’s some stuff opening up that I’m really interested in.

I was at MB previously.

I got accepted to NYCDA, downtown so I’m thinking about doing that camp. Applied to Flatiron, and GA as well!

See if the new company (if/when they hire you) does tuition reimbursement. Might be able to get them to cover the cost of those classes.

Have a relative that did General Assembly. He liked the teaching but they screwed him on the promise of job seminars/interviews at the end.

I’d go to a code camp that advertises a high post-grad job rate, and maybe that are feeders to corporations. Look around online for reviews.
